I remember when my boys were little, they had these toys that were called “Transformers.”  These toys were ‘pretty’ bizarre as they would start out looking like a scary robot.  By twisting, turning, and moving the parts, the toy could be transformed into something else, like a car or a truck.  The boys loved to play with them.  The meaning of Transformation is a dramatic change in appearance and form, hence the reason these toys were called “transformers.”  However, when you turn towards God and deepen your relationship with God, turning away from the way of the world, this is what happens to you.  God will work in you and through you.  You will be transformed and become a different person.

One may then ask the question, “How do I know if I have been transformed?”

In Romans 12:1-21, Paul is talking to the Romans.  Paul writes this Letter to them because he wants to go on a mission trip, but needs money.  The Book of Romans was written as a means for a “fundraiser.”  It was Paul’s hope that they would support him in this mission.  It is a beautifully written letter.  However, Paul doesn’t pull any punches.  He is very direct and to the point.  St. Paul says, “…Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think” (Romans 12:2).  Notice Paul doesn’t say for you to change the way you think, but it is God who will change the way you think.

Being transformed is something that happens through the work of the Holy Spirit.  It happens from within, by God working through you and in you.  And, here is the thing…You will look different to people!  They will notice!  They will see the change through your actions, words, and love for others.  They will notice the smile on your face.  Others will see the Holy Spirit hovering over you – literally!  You will not be able to help it!  It will become who you are and you will find yourself able to do things that you never dreamed possible.  You will long to spend time with the Lord.  You will look forward to going to church and worshipping.  You will know that God has transformed you.

Transformation is the dramatic change in appearance and form through the work of the Holy Spirit that transforms you from a person of this world into a new and different person that belongs to Christ.

Let us pray…Gracious God, transform our lives, bodies, and mind into your likeness.  Change the way we think and help us to see the world through your eyes – filled with compassion and love for others.  Lord, we love you so much. Amen.
