Feeling the Weight of the World?

Have you ever thought about the heavy responsibility of the president of the United States?  I am not asking if you like the president or not – but to realize the responsibility that is on his shoulders.  I know I have many mornings when I wake up, I immediately feel the weight of the responsibility that I shoulder as a pastor of a congregation.  God has entrusted me with His people and His church – to discern the ministries in that place, to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ, to be held above reproach, and to be a presence in the people’s lives who are going through difficult times – even death.  It doesn’t compare to the responsibilities of our president, but I can only imagine the weight he feels on his shoulders.

In 2 Kings 11:21—12:16, a 7-year old rules in Jerusalem.  It’s difficult for me to envision such a small child ruling over a country. Can you imagine the weight of this responsibility that this 7-year old must have felt?   However, it does seem that he has good people surrounding him to make good choices.  His name is Johoash, “and he did what was right in the sight of the Lord all of his days, because the priest Jehoiada instructed him” (2 Kings 12:2).  Therefore, even though this young child had a huge responsibility, God made sure he had what he needed to do the job.

I am willing to venture that all of us shoulder heavy responsibility of life where it feels almost too much to bear – children to raise in a good environment and a good education, sick parents who need care, looking for work to provide for your family, and the list goes on and on.  We do not have to be the president of the United States or the King of a country to know what it feels like to wake up in the morning and feel the weight of the world on our shoulders.  However, we don’t have to do it alone!  God will send us people to help shoulder the responsibility.  It’s just how God rolls!

If you wake up in the morning feeling overwhelmed with the responsibilities of life – ask God to help you!  Be specific!  Ask God to send someone to help you and guide you through the difficult times of your life.  Be amazed by what God will do for you!
