Being humble is probably one of the hardest things to do. Why is it so hard? And, do we do it automatically or is this something that God does to us and for us? Because here is what I think…I don’t think any of us want to be humbled! To be humble is to be submissive! It’s turning the other way. It means that you don’t get your way! It’s allowing yourself to be wrong – going beyond your pride. I believe to be humble is even when you read Scripture and you are convicted of your wrongdoing. Being humble is knowing you have messed up and feeling something in your heart – It’s that feeling of wishing it never happened.
In James 4:1-10, the Apostle puts it ever so bluntly. He says that you cannot have friendship with the world without being an enemy of God (James 4:4). And, here is the ‘really’ hard part- you live in this world and it is very difficult to not be a part of this world. Your desire for the approval of the world and love for material things is in your DNA. However, as a baptized child of God, the spirit of the Lord is also in your DNA! You belong to Christ and Christ wants you to come to Him – admit that you cannot live without His gift of grace. This is something that God does to you and for you – It is only through the work of the Holy Spirit that has that ability to humble you to the point of submission to your God. In your humbleness, God will exalt you – lift you up above the demands and desires of the world!
It is a complete transformation out of your control! The Holy Spirit frees you from your conviction of your wrongdoing and allowing you to live your life in Christ! It is receiving the Lord’s grace that makes that ‘feeling of wishing it never happened;’ to go away once and for all.
It’s pure freedom!
Let us pray, Gracious God, who would not want to be free of the guilt and hate in their heart? Help us to come to you for your amazing grace. Send your Holy Spirit upon us giving us the ability to humble ourselves before you. Lord Jesus exalt us – lifted us up in your presence and pull us ever so close to you. Amen.
