Sometimes common sense must come into play. Sometimes I think that we want to do something so bad, we will do anything to make things work. However, the situation may require us to take a step back, look at the situation, and let our common sense help us to make clear decisions about what will work and what will not. However, when it comes to God and the work we do for God, it seldom ever makes any sense at all. For example, I have seen 70 people be fed with just two small watermelons! Common sense made no sense at all! In fact, one may say it was impossible!
In 1 Samuel 17:12-58, David is working side-by-side with Saul. We could probably think of it as his training to become the King of Israel. Israel is up against the Philistines. There is one particular Philistine, named Goliath who wants to destroy Israel. Saul prepares David for battle. He puts on all his armor to protect him, including a helmet. David “tried in vain to walk, for he was not used to them” (v.39). (I find this to be a funny vision). And, so David takes all the armor off and when face-to-face with Goliath, “David put his hand in his bag, took out a stone, slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead, and he fell face down on the ground…When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled” (vv.49; 51). Common Sense would have said that this never could have happened. David did what no one thought could be possible.
This is how God works. When God is for us, no one can be against us! God does what makes no sense to us at all. In our churches, we think we don ‘t have enough money to do the ministries we want – but with God, the possibilities come to life. Often, we think that we are not equipped or talented enough to do God’s work, but God gives us what we need. When it comes to God and the work of the Kingdom, put your common sense aside. Let God work it out and provide what you need.
Let us pray, Gracious God, we try to do your ministry with common sense. But, you are not common. You are the ultimate and most high. You trump our common sense! We ask today that we prevail in your name – trusting you to provide for us. In your name we pray, Amen.
