Happiness

I would give anything and everything for any of my four children and my grandson.  There is no doubt in my mind that I love them so much and want everything good for each one of them.  That is a hope and a wish for any parent.  But, there are some things that no matter what – even if I had all the money in the world, I could not give them.  And, that is “happiness.”  Happiness is only something they can do on their own. I can pray for their happiness, but I cannot give them happiness.

In Jeremiah 31:1-4, God wants his people to be happy.  They have turned from God over-and -over again.  But, like a parent of a child, God wants them to be happy.  And so, God’s compassion for his people sees their need and provides for them – He blesses them, gives them rest, and provides unfailing love. And God says, “You will again be happy.”

As I think about this, I am moved that as a parent, it is what I try to do for my children – bless them, provide support in their endeavors, and love them with my whole heart.  But, then it dawns on me – this is how God loves me!  God blesses, gives rest, and provides unfailing love!

How could I not be happy?  Isn’t happiness just knowing that we are loved?

Let us pray, Gracious God, you care for us like a parent cares for their child.  Help us to remember that we are your children and want us to be happy.  Your gift of unfailing love is enough!  Help us to know that as we go through our days.  Amen.
