Death is inevitable for every single one of us. Not a one of us are exempt from leaving this earth. We do not have a choice as to whether we get to stay here or not. But, we do have a choice as whether we want death or do we want life. Jesus gave us that choice when he went to the cross. The hardest thing for humans is the difficulty to wrap our heads around that death is not viewed by humans the same way as Jesus views death.
In 1 Samuel 31:1-13, the Philistines attack Israel just as Samuel had predicted when called up by the medium, Endor. When Saul is badly hurt in the battle, he begs to be killed – “Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, ‘Draw your sword and thrust me through with it,’…but the armor-bearer was unwilling…So Saul took his own sword and fell upon it” (1 Samuel 31:1-13:4). Saul kills himself – He choose death – not life.
When we do not ask for forgiveness of our sins, we choose death. In God’s eyes, sin is death – Death in God’s view is our decision to not be forgiven – not only by God, but also ourselves. Choosing LIFE is knowing that through forgiveness of our sins, we are safe and secure in our future with our Lord. Judas did the same thing when he realized that he had betrayed the Lord. He kills himself – choosing death, instead of Life through the forgiveness of sin – The very reason Jesus went to the cross.
Let us pray…Gracious God – anyone who decides to take their own life needs you, but often do not realize the Life that you offer. Be with those who are hurting and may not know you. Send your servants to those who need to hear of your love and forgiveness. In your name we pray, Amen.
