Predicting the Future

I’ll be honest. I have stood in the grocery store line at times, picked up a magazine and was intrigued by reading my horoscope. No doubt, there is this innate desire for humans to somehow know what our future holds. Will I win the lottery? Will I marry my boyfriend/girlfriend? Is there a good job prospect in my view? Those are all things that at some point in our lives we would like to know the answers. Surprisingly, sometimes my horoscope hits a chord and feels like truth.

In Isaiah 7:1-25, God spoke to Ahaz and told him to ask for a sign. God says, “Ask for a sign from your God. Ask anything. Be extravagant. Ask for the moon!” (The Message). Ahaz doesn’t want to – He doesn’t think that he should test the Lord. Then Isaiah goes to Ahaz and tells him, “Well, if you don’t want to ask for a sign, I’m going to give you one anyway.” And, so Isaiah prophecies – He tells the future: “Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14 – See also, Matthew 1:23).

God knew the future of Isaiah – told him exactly what to do in each circumstance. God also offered a sign so that he would know he was doing the will of God. And, God knows our future! We can read our horoscopes, go to fortune tellers, and listen to the mediators and imposters of prophecy, but only God knows what our future holds. We may not know what will happen in each of our days – but, we do know the “truth” about our future. We know that God sent Jesus Christ so that our future is “safe and secure!”

We can’t find truth in magazines, books, or through fortune tellers. The truth about our future is found in the Word of God – Safe and Secure in the hands of God.

Let us pray…Gracious God, help us to turn to you to know about what our future holds. Help us to recognize that through you, we are safe and secure in know that it doesn’t matter what this day holds, but what is important is that we know what our tomorrow holds – a place with you in your loving arms. Amen.
