One of the reasons I hope I never have to return back to school is because I do not like to be tested. I think I probably have some anxiety issues when it comes to taking a test. I could study for hours, feel confident of the material I have learned, and still stress out when it comes down to taking the test. For some, however, taking a test is a challenge and they enjoy the challenge. I always envied those people. Passing a test is important to me – no matter what the test is on. But, have you ever thought about being tested by God and whether you could past His test?
In Hebrews 2:9-18, Paul is writing to the Hebrews about how Jesus started out lower than the angels (v.9), but it was through his suffering that revealed Himself to us. If you think about it, what Jesus did that day on the cross, people began to pay attention! It was eye-opening because it was so horrific. But, then Paul states, “Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested” (v.18). How was Jesus tested? Because he was completely human and like any of us, I am sure he had to have second thoughts about getting up there on that cross and dying the death that he died! Jesus could have said, “No!”
I don’t like being tested; however, there will be times in our lives when we don’t think we can handle the circumstances that we have been given. We will face suffering, hardships, and possibly be asked to sacrifice for the sake of others. But, notice that when Paul says, “…he is able to help those who are being tested…” The word, “is” is in present tense. That means Jesus is here right now…right now to help us in our suffering. Jesus knows our hearts, our pain, and our suffering. You can count on him to help you through!
Let us pray…Gracious God, Jesus was tested as a human being to carry through the mission of sacrificing Himself for our sake. It is so hard for us to wrap our heads around what that really means for us. Thank you God, for sending your Son on our behalf and helping us through our difficult days. We love you so much. Amen.
