Every night before I go to bed, I tell myself that ‘tomorrow’ I am going to exercise, eat healthy, and complete my ‘to do’ list. Every morning when I get up, I do the same exact thing I do every morning. I drink my coffee, go to my special room in the house, and “think” about all the things I said I was going to do that day. And, that is as far as it goes – Nothing changes. I continues to do the very things that I do not want to do or say that I am going to do. Changing our ways is very difficult.
In Hebrews 8:1-13, there is the echo from Jeremiah when God makes a new covenant with his people. We are reminded that as human beings, it is very difficult to change our ways. God sent Jeremiah to be a prophet to tell the people to turn away from their old selves and turn towards God – but they never would listen! So, God turned His back on them (v.9). God started over by sending us Jesus Christ so that when we continually do the things that we know we should not do, we have Jesus to turn to for our help and refuge.
Jesus is the “New Covenant” that God gave to us! Through Christ, we can wake up every single morning and start fresh. Jesus will give us the strength to change our ways! I never said it was going to be easy, and neither did Jesus. But, there is hope made through Christ. The slate has been wiped clean!
Let us pray…Gracious God, we give you thanks and praise for a clean slate – for the opportunity to wake up in the morning and try again to turn our hearts towards you instead of all the things that keep us from you. Help us to remember that through You, nothing is too hard! In your name we pray, Amen.
