We are human beings. There is no way for us to get around who we are. But, we are also created in the image of God. Unfortunately, we abuse our free will and often choose ways that are not of God – but of human desire. We think wrong things, we say wrong things, and we hope for the wrong things. Sometimes, I believe that we need affirmation – a reminder of who we are and whose we are.
In 1 Kings 18:17-46, is the Mount Carmel Test. The just of the story is that we have a choice. We can follow in the ways of God, or we can choose to follow in the ways of other gods But, God will always prevail! Elijah puts Baal (the other god) to the test – knowing that God will reveal God’s self at the appropriate time. And, God does! He shows up in the fire! God affirms to the people who they are and whose they are.
We belong to God. Let our actions demonstrate to others who we belong to and who we are in God and each other. Will we fail? Yes. Will we mess up? Yes. But, with Jesus Christ, we do stand a chance!
Let us pray…Gracious God, we love you, but yet we still do not do as you would want us to. Help us. Guide us. Let us choose you! In your name we pray, Amen.
